205 Hudson Street is pleased to announce an artist talk by Martha Wilson as part of MFASO Fall 2016 Lecture Series. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Martha Wilson is an American feminist performance artist and the founding director of Franklin Furnace art organization. By employing role-playing, costume transformation, and 'invasions' of other people’s personas, she has developed photographic and video works that explore her female subjectivity.
In 1976, she founded and became director of the Franklin Furnace Archive, an artist-run space that focuses on the exploration and promotion of artists books, installation art, video and performance art.
Since the early 1970s, Wilson has performed and exhibited in numerous galleries and museums exhibitions including ‘c. 7,500’ exhibit of conceptual art made by women at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California, and ‘Gloria: Another Look at Feminist Art in the 1970s’ at White Columns in New York City. DISBAND, all-female vocal performing artists group which was based in New York City from 1978 to 1982 formed by Wilson, IIona Granet, Donna Hennes, Ingrid Sischy and Dianne Torr, was included in the ‘WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution’ at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and the Incheon Women Artists' Biennale in Incheon, South Korea. She is currently represented by P•P•O•W gallery in New York City.
