The Ensemble Horizonte

The Ensemble Horizonte will be performing at 205 Hudson Street at 3pm on Tuesday, December 12th, in the Flex Space (room 202).
The Ensemble Horizonte, located in Detmold, Germany, presents an interdisciplinary program connecting contemporary music and texts devoted to Dadaism and the art of Marcel Duchamp. The program includes music by (amongst others) Malika Kishino, Giacinto Scelsi, John Cage, Earl Brown and Max E. Keller. The Ensemble will play in New York with four instruments: violin, viola, cello and oboe, completed by a speakter and performer, perhaps augmented with flute and harp.
The Ensemble Horizonte, led by the composer Joerg-Peter Mittmann, PhD of philospohy, devotes itself not only, but above all, to contemporary music. One of the main programmatic focuses is directed to the relation between music, literature and visual arts. There are many instructive parallels between the different genres. So in past the Ensemble Horizonte combined music by Morton Feldman with the well known pictures of Mark Rothko or Willem de Kooning, music in the spirit of Philip Glass with the short film "Railroad Turnbridge" by Richard Serra, music by Jörg-Peter Mittmann with the architecture of Frank Gehry.
The current project enlightens the relation between the aesthetics of Marcel Duchamp and modern music, especially the music of John Cage. Combined with texts of Dada style and Surrealism several works of contemporary music form a panorama view on sense and meaning in the articulation of modern aesthetics.
