Rochelle Feinstein is a painter navigating the terrain of abstract painting as it unfolds across diverse and thematically interwoven bodies of work. While drawing upon the conventions embedded in painting practices as much as those of contemporary culture, her works incorporate drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, has written about art and artists; and has lectured at universities throughout the US and Europe. Her exhibition at Secession/Vienna, The Today Show/Zeit Im Bild, will open in December, 2024. In 2022, Feinstein presented “historic” works in conversation with new works for You Again, a six-venue international collaboration with Bridget Donahue NYC, Hannah Hoffman, LA, Nina Johnson, MI, Campoli Presti, Paris, Candice Madey NY, and Galerie Francesca Pia, Zurich. Feinstein’s four concurrent retrospectives (2016-2019), titled, respectively In Anticipation of Women’s History Month, Centre d'Art Contemporain, Geneva, CH, I Made a Terrible Mistake, Lenbachhaus Staedische, Munich, DE, Make it Behave, Kestner Gesellschaft, Hannover, DE; concluding with Image of an Image, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, NYC. A collection of her selected writings, Pls. Reply, was published by Ugly Duckling Presse in 2019. Her work is included in public collections, amongst these are the Museum of Modern Art, NY, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The Hammer Museum, LA, Amore Pacific Museum of Art, Seoul, Lenbachhaus, Munich. Feinstein has been the recipient of fellowships and grants, including Anonymous Was A Woman, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, and the Joan Mitchell Foundation. She was a recipient of the 2017-2018 Rome Prize Jules Guerin Fellowship in Visual Arts, American Academy in Rome. In 2017, Feinstein became Emerita Professor of painting/printmaking, Yale School of Art. Yale University. Feinstein was born in the Bronx and lives and works in New York City.
