205 Hudson Facilities

Located in the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan, the 205 Hudson Street campus is home to the Hunter College MFA Program in Studio Art. The 80,000 square foot facility provides individual studio space for each student, several technical workshops, critique spaces, classrooms, and a large public assembly space. 205 Hudson is host to many public events and lectures, and also houses the BFA Program, as well as Art History and Curatorial Certificate classes. The 205 Hudson Gallery, a large exhibition space on the ground floor, is the site of MFA Thesis Exhibitions, as well as projects and exhibitions developed by the Hunter College Art Galleries and Curatorial Certificate Program.

Each student in the MFA Program is assigned an individual studio space ranging from 190 – 290 square feet. Students typically share a large studio with another student in the first semester, with the option of choosing a private studio in the second semester. Studios are allocated based on seniority, with the largest spaces reserved for students in their final year.

The woodshop is located on the second floor of the 205 Hudson Street campus and is commonly used by all students in the MFA Program. It contains major stationary equipment and a variety of hand tools, and is equipped with a Vibraclean ventilation system. In order to maintain a safe work environment, all students are required to take a mandatory qualification class prior to using these facilities. The sculpture area is located on the second floor adjacent to the woodshop, and is available to all students in the MFA Program after completing a qualification session. It consists of two general work rooms, an industrial spray booth, five kilns, laser cutter, and a 3-D printer. Various materials are stocked for students to purchase, including clay and plaster. Technical staff are available to students for individual tutorials throughout the semester. The photography studio is located on the third floor of the 205 Hudson Street campus. It contains a black and white wet darkroom and a print finishing room with digital printers and bookbinding equipment. The lab is open to all students after they attend an authorization workshop held at the beginning of each semester. The studio has three types of printers: large format fine art inkjet printers, a desktop inkjet printer, and color laserjet printers. The print finishing room has a heat press, paper cutters, and a large table with a cutting surface. Technical staff are available to answer questions and maintain the equipment. The Printmaking Studio and Riso Lab are located on the fourth floor of the 205 Hudson Street campus and are commonly used by qualified students in the MFA Program. The Printmaking Studio and Riso Lab have two presses and two riso machines, along with a large exposure unit for silkscreen. In order to maintain a safe work environment, all students are required to participate in a short orientation (and a workshop if they do not have experience in printmaking techniques) prior to using these facilities. 205 Hudson has a large public assembly space known as the "flex space," which is equipped with audio/visual technology for lectures and other special events. The room is also used for large critiques and student gatherings.
